I took a look thru Skennertons book and thru Reynolds book. I couldn’t find muzzle velocity results from the No. 5 which seems a bit odd, perhaps I missed it. One would think this would be a factor in deciding the barrel length, although for a Carbine for jungle use, the Mk 7 cartridge would still retain more than adequate velocity for intended ranges.

The No. 5 barrel is about 7 inches shorter than the No. 4, so I would guess a muzzle velocity in the vicinity of 2320 fps for the Mk 7 cartridge. Perhaps one of our members has chrono’ed Mk 7 ammunition thru their No. 5 rifle.
