Proof that the Mk.IV cartridge saw use during the Boer War:

Those who are familiar with the history of the Boer War will remember that Winston Churchill was captured by the Boers on the 14th November, 1899 when the armored train in which he was a passenger was derailed by the Boers in an ambush.  A shoot-out followed when soldiers of the Dublin Fusiliers and Durban Light Infantry who were manning the train returned fire prior to most of them being captured.  A number of the soldiers were killed and later buried in a common grave covered by a cement slab. The inscription on this slab is formed by .303 cartridge cases from the battle being set into the cement before it set.  Although most of the cases are from Mk.II cartridges, about a dozen are from the hollow nosed Mk.IV.

The photos show the plaque commemorating Churchill's capture, the grave, the inscription, typical letters formed with cartridge cases and, finally, a close up of some Mk.IV cases.
