There was a reason they changed to the square model. I think they made it square to it would look different. Anyway the square model has the letters XP meaning explosive proof. The old design had the potential for the primer being seated to set off the other primers resulting in the loss of some body parts. They redesigned the primer feed into the ram. As the ram lifts there is a block between the primer being seated and the other primers. Also the tray as a single file feed into the ram. Less primers in contact with the other.
 
I have had both and find both to work just fine. You have to remember to shake a bit every now and then. Lee have come up with three newer models since the XP; Ergo primer (looks very nice), new Auto Prime (they used the same tray as the Ergo) and Auto Bench Prime.
 
 
I use the XP for hand gun and the on press Safety Primer for rifle.
