Where is Hoadie when you need him?

I think Hoadie could smell the brass casing and tell if the casing are Canadian.

Careful of those R1M3Z's.  They may be machine gun rounds.  Just check it out.  Rifle rounds were stamped R1M1 and machine gun rounds R2M2 (or was it R1M2?)  I put some 500 of those R2M2's through my 1902 sporter.  The throat area was polished and the rifling edges no longer sharp (it had a new No4 barrel).  I did chronograph one and it was quite a bit faster than rifle rounds.  Those were cordite rounds with fluted strands.

The "Z" suffix means they are non cordite filled.
All the ones I've checked have a  39.6 grain nitro-cellulose stick powder.

"DI Z" would be Canadian. Defense Industries non-cordite.

"Defence Industries, Verdun, Canada. Known to have produced .303 cartridges in... Ball, Nitro-cellulose Mk 7Z (Canadian Pattern)

Ball, Nitro-cellulose Mk 8Z (Canadian Pattern)

Cartridge Rifle Grenade, Ballistite H Mk 1Z (Canadian Pattern)

Drill D 1942 (Canadian Pattern)

Tracer G Mk 2Z, G Mk 4Z, G Mk 6Z (Canadian Pattern)"

I cant find any reference to just plain "DZ" being Canadian. The Polish was the only one I found looking a a bunch of different sources. As it was only from one source it might not even be right!

Also mitigating against a Polish source would be the 1944 date - surely any factory production at that time would be for 7.92 calibre?

Funny that this should come up at this time.
I have a single loaded round with this headstamp, "D I   Z"  1943.

Just asked a Q on another forum & no reply;

The bullet tip is painted Gold.  I have seen red tips & white tips but not gold. Does anyone know what Gold tips represent??

Thanks in advance,

Richard.
PS, it looks correct, not like someone just painted it for the heck.

Evening All.

I haven't reloaded for the .303 for quite some time and have a new to me Lithgow.
Now, any new ammunition fits the chamber fine, but once fired brass, fired in other old Enfields, even after full length sizing,  is tight in the chamber, even with the die screwed into the press so that the she!! holder contacts the base of the die on the up-stroke.
Even sized like this, the bolt is sticky to close, as cases are too tight.
Been reloading for nearly 30 years on and off, and not had this problem before.

Am I having a blond moment or what???

I notice that rounds fired from the Lithgow fit fine without indexing, and it has a tight chamber & barrel.
(1927 with a 1954 FTR and new '53 barrel)  I'm sure it would fire .308" bullets well, never mind .311"

Do you lads think that I have a tight chamber, as in, tighter than normal?  I notice that the neck of a  case fired in this rifle  is still  tight on a .303" bullet.
I'm used to big sloppy .303" chambers and only re-size a minimum amount, so this is a new problem for me.

Any help appreciated!

Richard.
Edited to add the press & dies are RCBS in good order and little use.

Make sure you are trimming your cases after resizing. Also make sure you clean all the lube off before charging the case.

Make sure that the bullet is not contacting the rifling. Use the split case or blackened bullet method. I remember posting a tutorial a few months back. http://www.enfield-rifles.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=6992

Find someone who has a concentricity tool and run a few rounds over. Do both empty (resized) cases as well as fully loaded rounds. By doing resized rounds you can see if the cases need neck turning.

Guessing here.
Chamber needs a thorough cleaning.
Chamber rough or scratched.
Case too long catching in throat.
Bullet seated too shallow.
Rifle is rechamberd.
