I have come across a bandoleer of ammo.
The bandoleer is heavy tan canvas, has copper wire closures, is marked "RG16-12-54A"
It has 10 chargers loaded with ammo.
The ammo has "FN  52" Headstamp.
The primers have a greenish sealer, or it may be slight brass corrosion.
They have a silver projectile with a purple sealer on the case mouth and the tips of the projectiles have the same purple color on the tips.
What do I have?

I have some purple tip rounds that came from a belt of disintegrating links. Believe they are tracers

I am under the impression (possibly wrong) that the color around the primer  was the main indicator of ammo type for ammunition made in the British Empire/Commonwealth.

I was under the impression that it was tip and primer sealer color.

I must be living right(or wrong maybe?) I just snagged a bag of 100 Winchester (I know but the price was right) for $20! At this rate I'm gonna be an ammo millionaire!

** there was another item, but it gets its own post.** wink, wink

G'Day,
Anyone have a load for a 180 grain gas checked cast bullet using H4198.

Not specificly. However, Hodgdon and IMR are now married. In the Hodgdon, IMR, & Winchester Basic Reloading Manual from January 2010, page 13 relative burn rate chart IMR 4198 is #56 and Hodgdon H4198 is #57. I would say that makes them very close. If you look at 4895, it is different enough that Hodgdon H4895 is #69, Vihtavouri N53 is #70, and IMR 4895 is #71.
From the burn rate chart and the designation of 4198, I would say medium loads from a trusted source would be a good starting point as long as you realize minimum and maximum loads may not be the same. So I believe a medium load of IMR 4198  could be used with H4198 powder substituted. I would use exactly the middle to start and I would not go near the limits.
Now the Lyman 4th Edition Cast Bullet manual shows the Saeco #305 180 grain gas checked RNF bullet with Federal 210 LR primer and IMR 4198 powder from 21.0 to 29.2. The medium load would be 25.1 grains and I would round that to 25.0. I would feel it was safe to start at 25.0 and then increase up to 27.5 or decrease down to 22.5.
Just my two cents. Load at your own risk.  I have been told that 4198 and 5744 were both designed as smokeless replacements for black powder.

Thanks for the reply,
I had loaded 5 loads of 20 up to 23 grains with no signs of pressure. I will go a bit more now and see how it looks. With the 4 different loads I have tested the 20 grains was the best group by far. Hopefully the groups will close up a bit again with more powder. The 20 grain load shot a 1 3/4" group at 70 yards so was not to bad.

That's interesting, thanks.  Have you come across the South African R2M2 head stamped ammunition?  Muzzle velocity of 780 m/s (2550 fps), a copper jacket, aluminium insert and I don't recall it being boat tail.  It was loaded with cordite - the cordite was ribbed longitudinally and hollow and it did wear my barrel!

Never found such a beast, sorry.
The only Cordite I've ever seen looked like dirty angel hair pasta, long thin solid sticks.

Incidentally there is now a controversy (surprise!) about how the charge was set up for standard Mk VII ball. One camp swears by a specific grain weight, the other says that, due to variations in manufacture each batch of Cordite was measured by length to get a specific performance & then that exact same length was the load used, weight varying a bit, but performance being standardized.
